Devin Aromashodu is a young wide receiver who has been trying to make the Bears final 53-man roster all preseason. He is a talented, young wide out, with a lot of potential. Although he hasn’t played in many NFL games prior to this season, he could be set to have a breakout year with the Bears. If he makes the team that is. Since the competition was fierce between a bunch of similarly unspectacular wide receivers in Bears camp (it usually is), Aromashodu decided he had to go above and beyond to win a roster spot:

“I sent flowers to all the coaches, to keep me in mind,” he said Tuesday.

Cute, right? I mean that’s so sweet, but it couldn’t possibly impact a position battle on a pro football team, could it? Well those flowers were sent sometime prior to last Tuesday and you will have to judge for yourself, as Aromadoshu made the cut and is listed as the back up wide receiver, beating out Brandon Rideau for the spot. Also here is the final depth chart as released by the Bears in a cool new graphic.

There are plenty of good arguments on both sides of the debate regarding the Bears receiving corps. People are right when they say that Jay Cutler could use a primary receiver to take this offense to the next level. Others aren’t off base when they cite Matt Forte’s receiving ability and a tight end tandem as a reason the absence of a true number one is not a huge deal.

Looking back at recent Super Bowl winners, this might not be the best strategy for Chicago though. I mean that has to be the goal for this Bears squad, right? In a division that is up for grabs, a move like the one made for Cutler is designed to make you instant contenders. Sure, there is some time to develop some of the young guys, get Cutler settled, and get a receiver next year, but this defense isn’t getting any younger and will have to play a major role in any kind of run to and through the postseason.

There are very few champions in the last decade-plus who have had worse receiving situations than Chicago. Last year’s Steelers come to mind immediately, but Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward are much better than any of the Bears receivers, plus Pittsburgh had another factor working for them that sets teams without great receivers apart: an amazing defense.

After the Steelers, we’re looking at Plaxico, Harrison/Wayne, Hines Ward’s younger self, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, and a Rod Smith/Ed McCaffery combo that was solid for Denver. Even runner-ups sported guys like Fitzgerald and Boldin, Tim Brown and Jerry Rice, TO, Randy Moss, and Steve Smith.

There were also some teams that bucked the trend, but they all had something the Bears don’t. The Ravens, Steelers, and Bucs form a group of Super Bowl champs that didn’t wow anyone with their wideouts, but they had elite defenses and outstanding coaching. Throw the Patriots teams in there that won Super Bowls under the latter category as well. The point is, you need some kind of X-factor if you don’t have a great wide receiver and Forte, Olsen, and Clark only make up about an M-factor.

This isn’t to say that the Bears should sell the farm to pay for what’s left of the wide receiver free agent class, or that they don’t have a chance at a successful season. I suppose the defense has a chance to return to the form of a few years ago, but I wouldn’t count on it. They are also lacking in the special teams department as Devin Hester tries to be that number one receiver.

Thus ends your Bears doom and gloom. Go Lions.

Hey if nothing else, they still get to play Detroit twice and Brett Favre will probably be in the NFC North, so they will have a 50/50 chance of winning the division against the Packers.

Some Musings on the Bears from NQTC Reader/Contributor Gavin:

We'll find out if Marinelli is really an Autobot or a Decepticon soon enough

In honor of the much anticipated opening of the latest in the summer blockbuster franchise, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (due out on Wednesday night, June 24th) the Bears have been attempting to perform their own Revenge of the Fallen at Halas Hall this summer. Unfortunately, from the looks of it, new Defensive Line Coach, Rod Marinelli, has taken the Transformers theme a little too serious. As you can see, Rod’s arms have completed their transformation and his left leg is almost complete. Sadly, the goal post to the left of Jarron Gilbert in this picture is former Defensive Coordinator Bob Babich.

On a more serious note, there is encouraging news from those covering the Bears’ OTAs. It appears that under Rod Marinelli’s supervision the defensive line is actually transforming into a unit capable of generating a pass rush throughout the 2009-2010 season. Given the injuries to the secondary last year, putting more pressure on the opposing quarterback will be essential to the Bears’ success this year. Hopefully, the Bears have realized that utilizing people in roles that allow them to focus on what they do best is the best route. Rod Marinelli, largely known as the defensive line coach in the league will focus on our mix of young guns and more established veterans. Lovie Smith will finally return to handling the defensive playcalling, rather than just being the inspirational head coach that allows his defense to be picked apart by 6- and 7-yard slants the entire second half. And Bob Babich, will return to what he does best, being Lovie Smith’s inexplicable best friend in coaching.

OFFENSIVE MEANDERINGS

A brief note on the offense: I’m only half sold on Jay Cutler’s assurance that the Bears don’t need a No. 1 receiver in Plaxico Burress, Brandon Marshall, or some other option. If Devin Hester is the Bears’ No. 1 receiver, then can the Bears get someone who will step up as a quality No. 2? The Patriots’ No. 2 receiver is Wes Welker. Who would you rather have: Wes Welker or Devin Hester? As long as other teams have No. 2’s that are as good as the Bears’ No. 1 receiver, why can’t the Bears’ acquire or develop another receiver that is just as good as Devin Hester, say a 1B receiver. Right now as I see it, we have a No. 1.5 receiver in Devin Hester, and then a bunch of No. 3’s and 4’s in Rashied Davis, Earl Bennett, Brandon Rideau and Juaquin Iglesias.

While it’s nice to hear that Hester is building chemistry with Cutler, I would much rather hear that Iglesias or Bennett is finding a home as a reliable split end or slot receiver for the Bears. I’m not getting my hopes up for Iglesias (the 99th pick in the draft), but I’m more optimistic about Earl Bennett. Not only is he getting his college quarterback in Jay Cutler, it seems the Bears learned that asking a rookie WR to learn the playbook for all three receiver positions might have been a mistake. Hopefully they follow the approach I mentioned with the coaching staff; let their personnel focus on a single discipline they do best, and allow them to excel at it. In this case, I’d love to see the Bears have Bennett focus on starting opposite of Hester, with Brandon Rideau pushing him in camp. While it won’t solve all of the offensive problems, it is a step towards developing more capable weapons on offense. That would leave Iglesias and the stone-handed Rashied Davis to fight it out for the slot position. Should be fun to see all of these guys running their routes, seeing Jay Cutler check down and then hit Greg Olson over the middle for 15-20 yards, 5 or 6 times a game.
