Not Qualified To Comment » Ron Turner http://notqualifiedtocomment.com Thu, 15 Sep 2011 16:48:15 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.9 en hourly 1 The Tragedy of the Bears Coaching Staff Search http://notqualifiedtocomment.com/2010/01/the-tragedy-of-the-bears-coaching-staff-search.html http://notqualifiedtocomment.com/2010/01/the-tragedy-of-the-bears-coaching-staff-search.html#comments Thu, 28 Jan 2010 19:01:03 +0000 JavierSandooski http://notqualifiedtocomment.com/?p=6245 How would I describe the Bears’ search to fill the vacancies for Offensive and Defensive Coordinators?  Laughable.  Tragedy.  A joke.  Disaster.  You get the idea.  This has turned into a complete debacle – I really don’t think people understand the full extent of it.  For months, everyone knew that Ron “I don’t know how to draw a simple screen play” Turner would be canned after the season.  That was a given.  Luckily, the Bears knew this also and had all the time in the world to start their search for an OC early.  This is a good thing, right?  Wrong.  Pete Carroll messed up their plans and took  Bates with him to Seattle.  They next lost Rob Chudzinski, who chose to remain working for an underachieving Chargers team (and awful head coach Norv Turner – Ron’s brother).  They also missed the deadline to land Ken Zampese from the Bengals.  Last week was the lowest blow of all – Hue Jackson chose to go to THE RAIDERS (universally known as the worst coaching job in sports) over the Bears.  Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted this last week:

“Just wondering: Have more people backed out of the Pro Bowl or the Bears offensive coordinator search?”

Sad but true – the only thing more pathetic than the Pro Bowl in the NFL right now is the Bears’ coaching staff search.  Just when we thought things couldn’t get much worse, it did.  The Chicago Sun Times reports that the Bears are interested in University of Pittsburgh’s OC Frank Cignetti for the same position.  Wow – so now we’re going after a guy who works underbleepin’ DAVE WANNSTEDT?!?!?  But like Lovie Smith said, “People will want to come coach here.”  Right Lovie, you are clearly as delusional as the rest of the Bears front office.  Can’t wait for the 2010 Bears season.

The Bears have fired offensive coordinator Ron Turner, as well as offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton and tight ends coach Rob Boras, according to a league source.

Also, the Bears are expected to name assistant Rod Marinelli the defensive coordinator, according to a source. He will relieve head coach Lovie Smith of those duties.

I love both moves.  I have been a proponent of Marinelli’s since the beginning and I still feel that he can be a great defensive coordinator.  As far as Ron Turner is concerned, this was a long time coming and I’m not exactly sad to see him go.  Good riddance.

A source close to Charlie Weis confirmed that the former Notre Dame coach would be interested in the Bears’ offensive coordinator position if it were to become available after this season.

Ron Turner has to go, even if somehow Lovie keeps his job.  While it is undisputed that Weis was a terrible college coach, his NFL resume is far different.  He was the offensive mastermind of three Super Bowl champion Patriots teams from 2000-2004.  The only real question is, was that a result of Bill Belicheck, or was it truly Weis’s own genius?  A lack of success as a head coach at any level, college or pro, does not necessarily mean that the person would be a bad coordinator.

What do you think?  Besides of course the old “anyone but Turner” refrain.

Did I mention the Bears are -13 against the Browns this week? If we lose that is pretty much the season down the drain. Let’s hope Turner and Lovie have a plan, because there are no gimme games with this offensive line.
