It certainly comes as no surprise to anyone in the basketball world that the LeBron James free agent show would take precedence over other superstar signings in the league. James took a prime-time stage while everyone else was lucky to catch a shout-out on Mike and Mike.

Durant quietly resigned with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Amar’e jumped to New York with half a cycle of coverage. Dirk resigned to crickets. Bosh went to Miami—pre James’ signing—with a few lights flickering. And Carlos Boozer, former Utah star forward, joined the Bulls with no one outside of Chicago blowing a horn.

Lost in all the hubbub over the LeBron-Wade-Bosh machine in Miami is the branch on the power tree of the East the Bulls hurdled over by picking up a legitimate front-court presence. Already tops in the league with rebounds, Chicago got a solid 11+ rebounder, a low-post offensive threat, and a yang to Joakim’s ying who, unlike the still learning Florida star, can score consistently.

Chicago fans might be a little blue over LeBron choosing to go south—probably to skirt more Jordan comparisons—but the Bulls are looking awfully competitive in an Eastern Conference that sees a playoff team eliminated already in Cleveland, not to mention a one-year-older Celtics squad and an Orlando team still stuck with Vince Carter.

The chances of bringing this together are solid for Chicago faithful. Of course, all the online casinos for USA players and sports books would give far better odds if James joined – 11:1, in fact. But the Bulls could easily be the next-up contenders behind Miami next season. And anything can happen in the playoffs…

But no gambling man would rule the Bulls out completely. After all, Miami’s mega-star conglomerate has been tried in places like the NFL to no avail. And with Rose, Noah, Gibson and other talented players in place, Boozer joins a complete team with chemistry and simply adds to it without bringing a ball-hoggish, need-to-score approach.

You might find better odds on a slot bonus game, but the Bulls, no longer babies, are looking stronger this year than any year MJ wasn’t suiting up.

Time will tell, obviously, how everything melds. But the next time you’re floating around looking for an online casino bonus, check out the sports book link and, if you can grab some good odds on a Miami vs. Chicago Eastern Conference Finals, take it.

Saying James choosing not to come to Chicago is really a blessing in disguise would be a lie. But the Bulls have competitive fire, a score to settle, and now a legitimate piece of the puzzle to push them over the hump.

Have you heard about those Blackhawks lately? After making a run in the playoffs last year, they are off to a great start again this season at 12-5-2. Now, on the eve of their Circus Trip, management has leaked the information that they are close to signing Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews to long-term extensions, as well as being in talks with defenseman Duncan Keith.

Here’s the problem with that bit of “news”. It is not really possible with the NHL salary cap system that is currently in place. The same Tribune article that is insinuating that these deals are essentially already done out of one side of its mouth is explaining how it is impossible out of the other side:

The salary cap this season is $56.8 million. It’s expected to remain the same or drop slightly next season, which could handcuff the Hawks, who already have 13 players signed for around $43 million for 2010-11.

With Hossa on the hook for 12 years at about $5.5 million per and Huet another $5.5 million, you would have to think that Kane and Toews will command at least that. If they sign the long-term deal, maybe they would give a discount, but why would two kids with that kind of talent agree to be locked up at a lower rate than their value through their prime playing years?

The Hawks front office has worked many miracles the last few seasons, but this one would top them all. The little problem of “math” seems to be an inflexible obstacle to the signing of all three of these budding young stars. If it somehow happens, this Hawks team could dominate the next decade in Chicago. NQTC reader DC Blackhawks said it best: “if they do [these deals], they will own the city. Outside of MJ, few players have played in Chicago for 10+ years and their team was very competitive.” He makes a good point, although I don’t know if I’d go that far. Here was my response, “If they lock it up, maybe, but let’s see some cups first.”

Keep your eyes and ears open, an announcement about the extensions is expected in the next couple of weeks.

With the departure of Ben Gordon, the Bulls are trying to appease frustrated fans who feel that the Bulls let Gordon walk for nothing without any backup plan in place. Even fans who hate Gordon (and there’s a lot of you), Gordon leaving obviously hurts the team without anyone to really replace him. In general, most people feel like the 2009-2010 season is kind of a wash and it doesn’t matter what happens in 2009. The most important thing is not to lock the team into any huge long-term deals that would handicap their ability to pursue the big 2010 free agents. It would be nice, however, to get some help in the backcourt for Rose in the interim, and possibly try to solve the neverending problem of getting a legitimate post scorer.

Unfortunately, the Bulls seem to be a little lost on what they are doing. If Gar Paxdorf just did nothing and waited for 2010, that would be better than some of these rumors we are hearing. Let’s look at the three main ones and discuss exactly why they are retarded:

Allen Iverson: Supposedly, with Gordon about to sign on to the Pistons, the Bulls are looking at possibly sign and trading for AI. Don’t get me wrong, I love AI. No one plays with more heart, every single game. The problem with AI is that he needs to have the ball in his hands, and he needs to be the focal point of an offense. Although he will probably be looking for a multi-year deal, it won’t be too expensive, but that’s not the problem. The problem is our one most important goal this upcoming season is the development and growth of Derrick Rose. How will bringing in essentially a ballhog help the Bulls towards that goal? It won’t.

Jannero Pargo: Seriously? I mean Rose needs some backcourt help, but Ben Gordon lite? He is like the really really poor man’s Gordon. Why not bring in a young cheap guy that has something to prove, instead of a 30 year old defensive liability? We already had this guy and I remember calling him a garbage-time all-star. Just because he had one mediocre season in New Orleans two years ago doesn’t mean that nickname doesn’t still apply.

Carlos Boozer: Most of you are probably saying, “I understand why you don’t want the other guys, but come on, Boozer is a legit post presence that we’ve been looking for since, well, since forever”. While this is the best rumor that I’ve heard out there, there are a number of problems with it. First off, the character issues are rampant with Boozer. It’s tough to forget how badly he screwed the Cleveland organization a few summers ago, when they let him out of his deal (which they didn’t have to do) to resign him to a bigger deal and essentially give him a raise, but instead he took the “opportunity” to sign a huge deal with the Jazz. Loyalty means nothing to a guy like this. What about talent, you say? No one will argue that Boozer can score and rebound, but the guy is a terrible defender. Not only that, but more importantly, anyone we bring in must be compatible with Rose. Can Boozer run with Rose? I don’t think so, he is lazy getting back on transition defense and getting out in transition offense. This is the best option obviously, but it just doesn’t seem like he would be a good pair with Rose. The one main thing that really makes this guy attractive is that his deal expires at the end of the season, so it could be a one-and-done deal, if the Bulls weren’t inclined to offer him an extension. Regardless, he just seems all wrong for the Bulls new up-tempo offense led by Rose.

So overall none of these moves really makes much sense, especially in light of the fact that the Bulls are legitimate contenders in the 2010 free agent sweepstakes. Rumors also have the Bulls looking at Nate Robinson, although he would probably put them into the luxury tax this year and command a deal that extended past next summer. Instead, go out and get a young Rashard McCants type. Someone cheap with something to prove to play next to Rose. Then sit on your hands and see if a good trade can get done before the deadline or just wait out next summer.
