When Did Scottie Pippen Start Smoking Crack?

I love Scottie Pippen.  I mean love him.  And it’s not just because he was a member of the Beatles, wrestled a midget, and went balls deep on The Cleveland Show.  He is possibly the most underrated player in NBA history.  Everyone talks about how Michael made Scottie, but true Chicago fans know that went both ways.  When Jordan was gone, Scottie single-handedly took the Bulls to within one bad call of the NBA Finals (and it was a bad call, the Knicks got VERY lucky).

Anyways, this post is not about how great a player he was, but how terrible a GM he would be.  This amazing quote of his in response to a question of who to build a team around from the Orlando Sentinel is just mind-boggling:

If you want to ask me that then I’m going to probably go after the best player in the game and that’s going to be LeBron James. But I don’t know if LeBron James fits with the Chicago Bulls. I don’t know if I want Derrick Rose to give the ball up and let LeBron run the show. There are some great free agents out there. For me, you have to have the right fit. You just can’t go and get the best player. You got to have chemistry in this game.

So we can all agree that’s the dumbest thing we’ve ever heard, right?  I mean LeBron James can play with ANYONE.  Anyone.  The man made it work with a bunch of nobodies, not to mention old man Shaqckle, and he’ll make it work with Jamison.  But no, he won’t make it work with one of the best young point guards in the game.

What always amazes me is how these guys who had such a high basketball IQ on the court can be so clueless when it comes to general managing.  I mean Isiah Thomas, Steve Kerr, Kevin McHale, Michael Jordan, and Scottie Pippen (among others) were some of the smartest players to play the game.  The stories about these guys as GMs are priceless.  You would think it’d be obvious that drafting 3 point guards would be a mistake (McHale).  How about paying Eddy Curry $10 million a year (Isiah)?  Judging who to take between Kwame Brown and Tyson Chandler by who “takes it at me harder” in a game of one-on-one (MJ) is my favorite.

Let’s not give Scottie the chance to choose not to acquire LeBron because he wouldn’t work well with Rose.  I love the guy, but maybe he should just stick to midget wrestling.

Side Note: I’m not sure why even in a post where I am mocking Pippen, I feel the need to start off by defending him.  It’s just a constant load of bullshit when people say MJ made his career.  Wait, I already said this before, right? I need a therapist to work out this Scottie Pippen issue.

McHale didn’t draft three point guards in the first round. If you’re talking about the T-Wolves, McHale has been with NBA TV all season. He was fired by the Wolves prior to the draft.

True true, though his mismanagement of the team for all those years surely qualifies him to be on that list.
