Cubs Find New Way to Gouge Long-Suffering Fans
Well, if you thought the Ricketts family was going to be more fan-friendly to your wallets, you were sorely mistaken. As we all knew since day 1, the Cubs are famous for scalping their own tickets. Now they have just essentially made it official. Here’s the story from Cubs.com:
Starting Monday, February 15th at 10am CT, fans will have first access to all Chicago Cubs 2010 regular season home games by going to Cubs.com and paying a 20% premium on the face value of the ticket.
So what the Cubs are saying is that the February 19th sale date still exists, but now there is a February 15th “presale” date where you can buy tickets early if you pay 20% more.
Translation: Tickets cost 20% more this year. Guessing by the changes we’ve made and the last 101 years of history, I think I’ll wait until July when I can get $10 tickets after the 2nd inning to watch the 27-43 Cubs play the 22-50 Pirates on a Tuesday afternoon.

Isn’t there a limit to how many seats they’re pre-selling for each game?

I would rather pay the Cubs, who could potentially dump the money (or some of the money) back into the team then a scalper.

As the only NQTC follower who didn’t endorse Obama, it’s my duty to stand up for the free market economy! If it’s too expensive, don’t buy it. It’s supply and demand and as owners, the Ricketts family has every right to not leave money on the table. If the demand weren’t there, then it’d be a terrible business decision.

I agree. These are entertainment tickets not necessities. Let the market decide the price!
I will either choose to buy or not… but I won’t complain about the price.

[...] Yesterday the Chicago Cubs officially became the first team in any major professional sport to scalp their own tickets. It’s all funny to laugh at them for now, but don’t you think for an instant that the greedy asshole that owns your favorite team isn’t grinning like a clown over this news. <notqualifiedtocomment> [...]

As diehard fans without a boatload of money, we definitely have the right to complain about something like this. Yeah, the Ricketts family has the right to do whatever the hell they want with prices, but I would much rather be able to buy cheap tickets to see a team that I love in person than have to make the choice between breaking the bank or being relegated to following them on TV. Sometimes there are more important things than the bottom line and as owners of a major league team, the Ricketts family might want to consider fan satisfaction into their business strategy. Of course the demand is there…but once you start to price your diehard fans out of the market, the stadium becomes increasingly packed with corporate assholes that don’t follow the game. It’s their choice.

This is such a sneaky, BS way to jack the prices to all of the desirable games. I had made a list of games I wanted to buy on Friday, but now that is all torn up and thrown away. I’ll be with you on the street buying 2nd inning tickets from now on.
