Help the People of Haiti

Some might think that this plea for financial aid to Haiti signals our defeat in the fight against breast cancer.  While we have not given up on that fight, cancer has proven a bit too resilient for our combined $72 efforts.  Do I think that giving $10 to Haitian relief efforts will defeat the issues there?  No, but just like with breast cancer, every little bit helps.

Just to bring you up to speed if you’ve been eating too many twinkies in your comfortable American home and passed out before the evening news came on, a horrible earthquake has hit the nation of Haiti.  The death toll is going to be well over 100,000 when all is said and done, not to mention all the injuries and the homes that have been destroyed.  It is an indescribably tragic situation.  Also, due to a rotting infrastructure and political system, it is even harder to get aid to the people who need it most.

Which brings me to my plea.  Please help by donating any amount that you can afford.  Even if it is just $5 that would help.  Here are some resources you can use to donate money to the relief efforts:

For more resources, this article at USAToday.com lists many other places where you can donate to help the earthquake victims in Haiti.

Also, if you have donated through here or anywhere else, please leave something in the comments saying you did.  You don’t have to say the amount, but hopefully just seeing that other people contributed will help stir others to donate to the cause.

I also wanted to add Partners in Health to the list of organizations that you can donate to: http://www.pih.org/home.html. They have done great work in Haiti behind the efforts of their founder, Paul Farmer, and have focused specifically on health care provision and development of Haiti’s health care sector.

This type of event is always catastrophic, but considering that Haiti is one of, if not the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the earthquake directly hit its most populous city, it has the potential to be much worse if they do not receive help from the rest of the world. If ever there was a worthy cause to donate to, it would be this…not only to end large amounts of human suffering, but also to help a very, very poor country to get back on its feet and rebuild.
