Did Mariano Rivera Throw A Spitball?

I don’t know guys, you tell me.  If anyone thinks this isn’t a spitball, thats fine.  The bottom line is that he looks around to see if anyone is watching, then he spits on the ball.  See for yourselves:

I don’t think it would tarnish his legacy or anything, but it would throw into doubt a lot of his success (for me at least).

You’re an idiot. Spitballs help breaking pitches, not cutters.

Curt, you’re an idiot. You must be a Yankees fan.

The cutter is a fastball that does in fact, break.

Imprimis, Phil Cuzzi. Then the 2009 World Series DVD Pre-order is up ’starring the New York Yankees’. Thirdly, the Falcons/Bears beat the Phillies/Dodgers NLCS game Sunday night…in Los Angeles.

Then this?

Settle down Curt.

If it didn’t help, why would he do it? Unless I’m to believe that he spits on everything before he uses it. His fork, his steering wheel, his golf clubs.

I hate to say it, but obviously none of you actually ever watched Rivera, or you are all complete dumbasses. He has ALWAYS done this between pitches, while looking down. The camera angle simply makes it look like the spit is going on the ball, when, in fact, it’s going straight down in front of him.

Seriously…actually WATCH the game more than once a year, and you’ll pick up on things like this.

I hate the Yankees but that makes me like Mariano more.

Obviously, that spit breaks just before it hits the ball. Rivera only spits one spit and it’s a cutter.

Thanks Bob. The camera angle does make it look like he spits in the ball, but I will admit that you’re right, he doesn’t appear to do it upon further review.

I will now watch more games now to pick up on the players spitting habits. When that is completed I will move on to crotch grabs followed by bubble blowing.

probably rubbing a loogie into the ball for more gription, not a true spitter.

If he was cheating (which is possible, but it was probably just an accident because he does spit on the mound between almost every pitch) then he wasn’t too creative.
Also, if you are bored check this out about the 10 biggest cheaters in baseball history:
