Peter King Thinks NFC North is the Best Division in Football…Oh and That The Bears Will Be in the Super Bowl
I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but on the cover of SI.com today is a story about Peter King’s picks for the upcoming NFL season. Apparently he loves the NFC North, since he has the Bears going 11-5 and the Pack and Vikings going 10-6 (no surprise there, he LOVES Favre), and all that is just fine, even if it might be a stretch.
Then he gives his playoff predictions. That’s where the love gets a little bit much. He picks the Vikings and Packers to both win Wild Card games, then the Packers to win their divisional round game while the Bears down the Vikings in theirs. Then he has the dream matchup that we would all love to see, a Bears-Packers NFC Championship. Who wins that? The Bears of course. Eventually whatever paint he was huffing must have run out, since he finally has the Bears choking in the Super Bowl to the Patriots.
While it seems like I’m hating on my beloved Bears a little bit, King’s predictions are a little over the top. Cutler definitely makes this team better, but I think he might be blinding some analysts to the fact that our offensive line is average at best, our defensive line is a huge question mark, and our secondary has more holes than a slice of swiss cheese. All that being said, the NFL is a crazy league with a lot of unpredictable runs by teams. The Bears definitely have the talent on both sides of the ball to play deep into the playoffs. Only time will tell if King was crazy or prophetic, but either way its good to see “experts” think the Bears are a legitimate contender this season.
I have a feeling that this season will be a wild ride one way or another, so hang on to your hats Bears fans.

It totally makes me uneasy when my teams are favored, or at least getting tons of hype for being a dominant team before the season starts. The only time I can remember feeling comfortable about that was with MJ and the Bulls. This type of stuff scares me.

Nobody is talking about the Packers. Even coming off a 4-12 season, I think they’re one of the best teams that nobody is talking about.

I agree with the previous comment. I don’t think 10-6 is unrealistic for the Packers and nobody is talking about them. They’ve been simply dominating during the preseason. The new 3-4 defense seems to be working out well. Everyone’s back and they now have B.J. Raji plugging up the middle. The only thing Peter King is wrong about is that the Bears won’t make it that far. Forte is simply awesome and Cutler is a great upgrade, but the rest of the team is suspect. As great as Briggs and Urlacher may be, their stats don’t reflect that. The Packers have Rodgers, Jennings, Grant, Woodson, Hawk, Raji, Driver, and Kampman. They have much more talent and the games they lost last year were by the slimmest of margins.
I do agree with King though that the NFC North is perhaps the most exciting division this year!

[...] Oh Chicagoans. Have the Cubs taught you nothing in all these long years? Peter King doesn’t really believe the Bears are going to the Super Bowl, he’s just trying to make you kill yourself after they let you down. Again. Damnit. <notqualifiedtocomment> [...]

Raji will likely get more snaps at the end position rather then the nose tackle, but in a 3-4, every linemans’s job is to essentially “plug” their gaps. I’d say the biggest holes with the bears team is their secondary, and depth on their D-line. They have an unbelievable crew of linebackers, but that won’t help much if the D-line can take off some of their pressure.

I love the Bears and NFC North football as much as the next guy, but Peter King needs to lay off the pubcorn.
