Tony Pena is a real ball buster.

How did the Sox let this guy get away?!
In Wednesday night’s marathon game that lasted early into Thursday morning, the White Sox lost the war 1-0 on Ken Griffey Jr.’s RBI single in the bottom of the 14th inning with two outs and two men on. Tony Pena was saddled with his fourth loss of the season, but some of his other teammates were just as responsible for not finishing off the Mariners sooner.
- With Jim Thome at bat, and Carlos Quentin on deck in the top of the 10th inning, Scott Podsednik was picked off third base. Ozzie Guillen couldn’t help but sound completely befuddled as Podsednik wandered too far from the bag and was caught by a quick throw from the Mariners Catcher.
“‘What were you thinking?’ That’s all you can say,” Guillen said. “You can’t get mad at that play because you don’t expect it at the big league level. You expect everyone to know what they’re doing, what their roles are and how important (they are). I guess he was thinking about something else.”
- In a far less isolated incident, Sox hitters went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position, which may have been excusable against King Felix (1-for-7) but not against the less than imposing, weary Mariners bullpen.
As I mentioned, the Sox lost the war, but Tony Pena ensured that he won the battle with Adrian Beltre. With Beltre racking up the late inning stolen bases due to defensive indifference throughout this series, Pena had enough. While the Seattle crowd booed every throw over to first base in the 14th, Pena was inflicting some serious damage and keeping Pena close to the bag.
At one point, Steve Stone or Hawk Harrelson called out Beltre for his grimacing, saying “That’s the look of a guy who is going to steal second on the next pitch.” Well the guys in the booth should rethink second-guessing Mr. Beltre. I give him credit for staying in the game and scoring the winning run, because if I had what he had, I would have retired from baseball immediately.
