It is the 30th anniversary of one of the great promotions in sports history.  When you discuss great promotions in sports, invariably the discussion will include nickel beer night in Cleveland and battery giveaway night at the Vet.  But no discussion is complete without talking about Disco Demolition Night.  Bill Veeck, famous promoter on both the North Side and South Side, teamed up with Steve Dahl to bring us a night no one would ever forget.  Here is the video:

For a true explanation of the promotion and what was behind it, The Reader has an excellent tribute and discussion they ran last week regarding the infamous night.  Bill Veeck is quite the character.  In fact, I heard this entirely uncorroborated story that when he worked with the Cubs, he used to buy 2 bleacher tickets to games, one for himself, and one for a keg he would wheel out there and give out free beer to all the center field bleacher fans.  Whether its true or not, the fact it exists, coupled with Disco Demolition Night and countless other crazy stories tell a lot about the man who put the fun in Chicago baseball through countless disappointing seasons on the field.
