Everyone Feels Bad About Santo Not Getting Into U of I…Wait, What?
I’m not sure if anyone has been following the University of Illinois scandal that has been blowing up in the Office of Admissions. Basically there are allegations that people possessing clout within the state have been able to get family members into U of I in Champaign even if they did not deserve to be there based on merit.
Okay, I’ll admit I don’t give a shit either, but here’s where things get interesting. Apparently someone’s name was blacked out in public documents that the Tribune requested from U of I. It’s hilarious that the name was blacked out, especially considering the context of the conversation made it obvious who was being discussed. I just want to make clear, Ron Santo has nothing to do with this scandal; this was just random conversation between two people involved in it about Ronnie. Here’s the story:
In records released last week, U. of I. officials blacked out Cubs broadcaster Ron Santo‘s name in an e-mail discussion about one of his Hall of Fame snubs.
The conversation took place between university lobbyist Terry McLennand and Teresita Soto Plutz, a medical school official. The two bemoaned Santo’s latest rejection after McLennand asked Soto for help securing a residency for a connected candidate.
“Okay, let me call them,” Soto writes back. “Well, the hubby is unhappy that [name redacted] got overlooked again.”
“Poor [name redacted],” McLennand wrote. “I had not heard, he should be in. Did your husband get tickets?”
The e-mail is dated March 2, 2005, the day Santo failed in another bid to enter Cooperstown. U. of I. spokesman Tom Hardy said the employee handling the redactions didn’t know who Santo was and assumed he was a rejected student.
Ummm…nope, Ronnie isn’t a rejected student in the literal sense of the term, but he sure as hell is a rejected member of Baseball’s greatest fraternity, the Hall of Fame.
