Milton is a Dorky Name

Just thought I would get the bashing started in the headline.  When the Cubs signed Milton Bradley this fall, or whenever it was, the first thought everyone had was along the lines of “oh boy here we go,” with worries about his attitude, chair throwing, and penchant for injury.  Once that died off, some started looking at the perks of the move like Bradley’s discerning eye, his high batting average, and overall talent.  From then on it was a mix of the pros and cons until the season started.

Well, now Mr. Bradley is hitting at a clip similar to a one-armed blind kid in the fast cages and he’s having his first legit injury problem mixed with some of that “not quite 100%” talk.  If he expected a honeymoon, he was sorely mistaken.  The other night he was booed a couple times after not running out a grounder and not hustling for a foul ball.  Come on Dorn!

Those of us with half-full glasses were sure to mention the Lou-factor when Bradley came on board and we’ll get the chance to see what effect the skipper had on him now.  Sounds like Lou and Milton met yesterday morning and Lou gave a talk about playing hard and decided Bradley wouldn’t play until he was 100%.

Is it just me, or will that be whenever Bradley decides he wants to play?  I don’t mean to write Milton off already–I’ve loved his patience at the plate and think he will be valuable if he gets it together–but he just seems apathetic.  Not cool Milton.  I know the fans in LA might not have cared that you didn’t bring it every night, but Cubs fans don’t try to beat traffic by coming late and leaving early.  If you don’t play hard here, you’ll hear it.

Hopefully Bradley can shake the injury, refocus, and hit his way back to the four spot in the lineup.  In the meantime, let’s get some damn runs.

Milton Bradley deserves the boos for not hustling and not playing hard. I think Lou is handling the situation very well by not playing him until he’s 100%…like you say, determining what is 100% is going to be the difficult part. However, I know Cubs fans sometimes have a tendency to get down on new acquisitions too early in the season and by doing so, make it even more difficult for the player to get back on track. I know, I know….professional athletes should be able to deal with anything. But, we all know how fragile and sensitive some athletes can be. Instead of turning into Philadelphia and booing everybody who doesn’t go 4-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs, my hope is that Cubs fans will reserve their boos for when Milton actually deserves (like when he doesn’t play hard). Wait until the end of May or June to fully criticize his sub .200 average. At least, that’s my take.

Agreed, I’m definitely not that upset about his numbers so far. They just kind of compound the attitude/injury problem. The hitting will come around I’m sure.

I say let him bitch and moan all he wants. Who cares? As long as he doesn’t throw a beer bottle at me or something. All I care about is if he hits. If he wants to give the finger to the media and fans so be it, as long as he’s producing on the field.
