Annoy Millions, Win an Emmy
The Sports Emmy Awards are coming up later this month and Awful Announcing listed the nominees for this year’s event. Some are solid choices, but as always there are some absolute head scratchers.
A few of the awards are event driven, or show driven, which I suppose is hard to argue with. The Super Bowl is good, golf and tennis majors are always well done by the networks, and there should be a nice battle between Inside the NBA and PTI for the Outstanding Daily Studio Show.
The problem comes when you start judging some of the nominees by deciding whether they are watchable or not. It’s hard to watch Buck and McCarver, yet there they are right on the list. For every guy at the top of his field like Ernie Johnson, there is a has-been gasbag like Chris Berman.
To me the absolute kicker comes in the category of Outstanding Sports Personality – Studio Analyst. Tom Jackson should run away with this one in my opinion, but the way these things work I wouldn’t be shocked if either of the two laughers on there win it. John Kruk and Terry Bradshaw are awful. Kruk is part of a Baseball Tonight crew that has taken a once entertaining show down into the dumps and Bradshaw is just plain embarassing.
Oh, and the X Games are on there too. I have nothing against the X Games, but all the 90’s era, ESPN2-esque graphics and a lot of yelling “oooohhhhhhh” doesn’t seem to make up a great live sports special. All I know is that the list lacks a certain Randy Moller.
