Does Vinny Del Negro Know Derrick Rose Wasn’t Traded Away?

Wait, so which one is Tyrus and which one is Tim?

Wait, so which one is Tyrus and which one is Tim?

The Bulls are winning quite a bit lately.  They have taken 4 of their last 6 games, had a great short-handed win against the Nuggets, and the new guys have been looking really good.  All that being said, something strange has been going on.  As the game goes into crunch time in the 4th quarter, Derrick Rose has been nowhere to be found.  The last 3 games he has been conspicuously absent in key parts of the game and Vinny seems to be going with Hinrich.   Here’s a little summary of his 4th quarters the last 3 games (stats from Popcorn Machine):

2/20 vs. DEN: Rose came out with 9:30 left in the 4th quarter and did not come in the rest of the game.  During the time he was out, the Bulls made a 10-0 and 13-3 run.  The Bulls won 116-99.

2/22 at IND: Rose came out with about 5:30 minutes left in the 4th and came back with 1:30 minutes left in the game.  The Bulls were already down by a bunch and that deficit ran up 3 more points while he was on the pine.  He came back in with the game out of reach.  The Bulls lost 98-91.

2/24 vs. ORL: Rose did not start the 4th after playing more than 32 minutes of the first 36 minutes.  They started the 4th up by 5 and with Rose off the court they expanded that lead to 17.  The Bulls ended up winning 120-102.

While initially this seems to be a mistake by Vinny (and it is definitely a mistake), you can’t argue with the results.  It shocked me to see how well the Bulls have played without him in the 4th.  Is he getting tired?  Does Vinny just not trust him?

No matter what the reasons or results, this must stop.  This team is not a legitimate contender and its of crucial importance that Rose get good experience in key situations.  That should be the priority, and hopefully Vinny realizes that sooner rather than later.

If you read David Thorpe’s rookie watch he says that it’s because Rose’s defense isn’t great and therefore would rather go with the more proven defender in Hinrich over Rose in the 4th.

The problem is Hinrich is getting that on reputation only. He is not the same defender he was before and quick guards destroy him. With this swap not only are the Bulls still getting little on ball D from the point, but Kirk gives them little offensive help as well. Initially I thought it would be alright with Vinnie because of the solid assistants he can go to, but either he is ignoring their advice or they are also not thinking clearly on the Rose/Hinrich 4th quarter substitution decision.
