Bucs Release Brooks, Dunn, Others

The Tampa locker room will miss the country tunes of Brooks & Dunn next season, and there is no way to know how that will affect the team.  What’s important to us, other than bad jokes, is what this means for the Bears.

With Forte and company, the Bears aren’t in the market for Warrick Dunn and while Derrick Brooks is a fantastic linebacker, he is old and would probably cost too much money.  Those in the “others” category are the most interesting for Chicago.

One of the premier positions of need this off-season is wide receiver, and the Bucs let two go today.  Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard have had plenty of success in the NFL and warrant at least a mention.  I can’t help but think that this would promote the same pattern the Bears have fallen into in recent years regarding wide receivers.  Receivers don’t come here to die just because the quarterbacks are bad; sometimes the receivers have a foot in that grave already.

The most intriguing release to me is Cato June.  June was a safety in college that has shifted to become a good linebacker in the NFL.  He was with the Colts during their Super Bowl run and has been with the Bucs since then.  Obviously, that means he is well versed in the Tampa-2 and could fit right in with the Bears.  June is also younger than any of the other guys released.

That being said, I’m not sure any of this should interest the Bears too much.  Unless there are some players hankerin’ for some country music.
